RASRL Student Papers

The Romanzo Adams Social Research Laboratory collection includes thousands of student research papers about local culture from the territorial era through statehood. Written between 1928 and 1974, the students went out into the field as interviewers and observers, and their fresh and firsthand perspectives provide details about life – social, on-the-ground history – which are immensely valuable in attempting to understand the experiences of Hawaii residents.

We are proud to launch a searchable database that includes the first round of entries that will make the papers more accessible to our researchers. More will be added throughout the year so check back often.

Read more about the database on our blog here.

The University Archives contains the official and unofficial records such as administration-, faculty- and student-created materials, documenting the history of the University of Hawaii and its role in local and state history. The Archives makes these materials available to the public.

In order to promote an understanding and appreciation of Hawaii's rich multi-cultural heritage, the Manuscript Collections document the people, history, culture, and politics of Hawaii, and support scholarly research, teaching, and public awareness. The Manuscript Collections include records of international peace organizations focusing on Asia and the Pacific, the Japanese American Veterans Collection, the Hawaii War Records Depository, the Hawaii Congressional Papers Collection, and other modern political papers.

The Hawaii War Records Depository is a collection of materials dealing with World War II as it affected Hawaii and its residents. During its 1943 session, the Hawaii Territorial Legislature created the HWRD at the University of Hawaii and appropriated funds to preserve materials collected from individuals and organizations throughout the state. With its noteworthy collection of personal diaries and materials, organizational records, and photographs, the HWRD attracts researchers and scholars from around the world.

The Japanese American Veterans Collection documents the rich heritage of Hawaii's AJA veterans and their families, including the 100th Infantry Battalion, Hawaii Territorial Guard, Varsity Victory Volunteers, 442nd RCT, 1399th Engineers, and Military Intelligence Service. The story of these veterans and their families emphasizes the values of democracy and civil liberties in American society.

The Hawaii Congressional Papers Collection includes the papers of Hawaii delegates to the U.S. Congress since statehood in 1959 to the present. Current holdings include the papers of Senator Hiram Fong, Senator Spark Matsunaga, and Representative Tom Gill.
